Playing Sports in Richmond

Richmond is Metro Vancouver's undisputed capital for badminton and indoor court sports. The city's large East Asian community has driven the development of world-class facilities — Stage 18's 18-court badminton centre is the largest in British Columbia, and Badminton Vancouver's 12-court Olympic-grade facility is a short drive away. No other municipality in Canada has this concentration of dedicated badminton infrastructure.

The Canada Line SkyTrain connects Richmond to downtown Vancouver in 25 minutes, with stations at Bridgeport, Aberdeen, Lansdowne, and Richmond-Brighouse. Most sports facilities are a 5-15 minute drive from a SkyTrain station. The Richmond Olympic Oval at the Bridgeport waterfront is a 3-minute walk from the Lansdowne station. Free parking is available at almost every facility — a significant advantage over Vancouver proper.

Richmond also leads the region in indoor soccer, with Full90 Soccer Centre operating three full-size indoor turf fields. 6 Pack Indoor Beach is the only indoor beach volleyball facility in Metro Vancouver. The Olympic Oval, built for the 2010 Winter Olympics, now houses basketball courts, a climbing wall, and multi-sport gymnasium space. It is one of the most visually impressive sports facilities in the country.

Evening availability at Richmond badminton centres is competitive — regular players book weekly slots well in advance. If you are flexible, weekday afternoons (1-4 PM) have the best availability and lower rates. Weekend mornings are busy with junior programs and coaching sessions. For first-time visitors, most facilities offer single-visit passes so you can try before committing to a membership.
